European Christmas markets are magical and offer a festive atmosphere with unique traditions, local food, handcrafted gifts, and beautiful decor. I recently traveled to Germany and Austria and had a truly magical experience. I experienced a true winter wonderland as it was snowing and made the trip even more memorable.
munich
Germany is known as the birthplace of the Christmas markets. We traveled to Munich and they alone have approximately 12 markets, having only have visited six or so, it left me with the desire to make this trip a tradition, visiting them all over Europe. Between the smell of mulled wine and gingerbread, the markets were just incredible to visit and explore.
salzburg
Salzburg is the location of Mozart’s hometown, it features Alpine traditions, nativity scenes, and local delicacies. The markets were illuminated with many twinkling lights and smell of deliciousness. The second day in Salzburg we woke up to a winter wonderland since it had snowed all night. Several of us ventured out to St. Wolfgang, Austria where we took a boat to three villages to experience once again more Christmas Markets.
st wolfgang
St. Wolfgang, Austria, is a picturesque lakeside town located on the shores of Wolfgangsee in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria. We drove an hour via bus before taking the boat to three different villages. See for yourself how magical this was…
The markets in the villages were my favorite, they felt homie is the best I could describe them. During the Advent season, St. Wolfgang transforms into a magical Christmas wonderland with festive markets, lights, and holiday decorations. The vendors were locals and they sure were lovely. The made us feel at home with their tasty delights and beautiful hand crafted gifts.

Forest Park
Forest Park is a public municipal park in the Tualatin Mountains west of downtown Portland, Oregon, USA. Stretching for more than 8 miles (13 km) on hillsides overlooking the Willamette River, it is one of the country’s largest urban forest reserves. The Stone House located within the trail was actually the restroom building for the park back in the early 20th century. Over time, the building fell into disrepair and became a popular spot for local legends and ghost stories, leading to its nickname “Witch’s Castle.” Check out my buddy Che, the sweetest rescue ever and child to my roommate Brooke. We kept each other company and he made it bearable when I missed my tribe from back home.
downtown portland
Exploring downtown Portland was quite relaxing. Despite there being an increase homeless population and substance abuse problem, Portland is a beautiful city to visit, explore, and I highly recommend exploring their iconic area such as Powell books and Portland Waterfront and experience their beautiful cherry blossoms. I was even lucky enough to find my favorite Nicholas Sparks book, “The Wedding” I was also luckily to capture the cherry blossoms before leaving Portland and heading back to North Carolina. Let’s just say, it’s definitely a popular time of year, plan accordingly as parking can be difficult.

There are many reasons to travel. Maybe you want to explore, try new foods, and maybe even engage with different cultures. Ever since I could remember, I have loved planning vacations and exploring new surroundings. We traveled as often as our jobs and budget would allow, but after working through a pandemic in the emergency department and having a cancer scare, I decided life was too short to stay still. I decided traveling was more than a pastime, it was my passion and desire…an addiction. Follow me as I hope to inspire you to travel, explore, and wander.
“Traveling-it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”
What are your must haves in regards to traveling? These are favorite items that I cannot travel without them. Most are Amazon finds and remember Prime Day is July 11-12. Happy shopping!
SuitcaseSet/Carry-On
I have traveled with this set for the last two years and while it has worked great, I now just travel with a carry on. I did recently upgrade to a Mono carry on, but recommend this set as it is efficient, light, and sturdy. The Mono carry-on plus is by far my favorite! Made with all vegan material, spacious, sturdy, and comes with lifetime warranty. The carry on also includes 2 shoe bags, a laundry bag, and vegan luggage tag. Use this link for a $20 discount.
Compression Packing Cubes
I have used these compression packing cubes for several trips and they not only did they help me stay organized, but also saved me a ton of space.
Portable Luggage Scale
This scale saved me to having to pay over weight fees. It doesn’t weigh anything and fits in any corner of your carry on or hand held bag.
Backpack
I have used both these backpacks in the past and depends on what I am packing determines which one I take. Nordace offers a thinner bag, which fits perfectly under the seat and has different compartments including a charger port and laptop storage. This second bag, is a bit larger and plenty of room, it does fit under seat, but a little snug. Plenty of compartments, including a water resistance pocket, a compartment for shoe storage, a charger port, and separate laptop storage.
Air Tags
I cannot express enough how important these are. These have been a game changer when tracking luggage. On occasion I volunteer my carry on (specifically on my way home) and this gives comfort in knowing I can track and always find my bag. I purchased this pack for my family, but I personally own 3 for myself. Super great deal!
AirPods Pro
These AirPods Pros are a must! Noise cancelling alone is so worth the price. Nothing like getting a good night’s rest after your dinner to kill time during your long flight.
Bluetooth Wireless Transmitter
This is a great item and an essential for flying. Certain airlines have an Aux jack and this transmitter sure comes in handy. I use my AirPods quite often and this transmitter not only makes it possible but allows a second user. I was quite pleased with the battery life and well as how quickly it charged.
Hand-Free Phone Mount
This travel essential phone holder helps to free up your hands and enjoy travel. You can mount it to various seat backs or tray table during a flight in order to watch a movie.
Travel Cable Organizer
This organizer has saved me tremendously, not only keeps me organized, but saved me from losing these important cables. Big enough to store several cables, but small enough to fit anywhere.
Charger Bank
This is a great pack and fits perfectly in the organizer. Charges quickly and is able to charge my phone approximately 4-5 times and has two ports to simultaneously charge two devices.
3:1 Charger
I do not travel anywhere without this! It not only saves space from using multiple plugs when traveling internationally, but folds up to one small square for storage. Great investment right here!
USB Battery Operated Desk Fan
This small and compact fan saved me several times while visiting Europe. Most European countries do not have AC. This powerful little fan charges quickly and lasted overnight, which helped me sleep comfortably.
Light Blocking Sleep Mask
If you travel Internationally, most flights are overnight. You definitely need to get your rest, because you will probably arrive and start your day. This soft cotton mask has a great price for it’s great quality.

When traveling with a carry on and having limited space, these are great and hold a good amount of your favorite scent. They are refillable and the size of a lipstick. Pack your favorite perfume here.

If you’re traveling outside the US, you need this. You can definitely find one at the airport if you forget it, but this one is compatible with 200+countries.
Selfie Stick with 360° Rotation Tripod
If you travel solo, this tripod/selfie stick is a great investment for your pictures and videos. This offers face tracking, has a stabilizer, and a remote control. It folds and fits in the palm of your hand.

These towels came in handy in Europe sine they offered no washcloths. These are great for face and big enough for bathing. They are individually packed and fit anywhere.

Living in Portland gave me the opportunity to explore many different areas in Oregon & Washington State. Vancouver was only a 10-minute drive from the house I was living in and I would visit often as they had the cutest farmer’s market on the weekend. The Vancouver Waterfront is a newly developed and offers many restaurants, shops, walking paths, and stunning views of Mount Hood.
They have murals everywhere and the cutest coffee shops. The short drive made it easy to go spend the afternoon enjoy the landscapes and vibrate and colorful streets.
If you’re in the Vancouver area check out Joe Brown’s Cafe for delicious all American breakfast, just don’t expect to find grits, it’s pretty much non-exiting.
Joe Brown’s Cafe 817 Main St, Vancouver, WA 98660
